Dick Morrill: A Retrospective
So this one time I was going over the curriculum for this class and I completely forgot that I needed to see two art shows. Bah, I lose. Saying that, I'm hoping that my opinions from viewing the work in the Foreman Gallery and looking at things online will suffice.
After viewing Morrill's work, I was amazed with the narrative of the collection (Yes, I thought that before I read the event description...)Even though I didn't quite understand the story in all the pieces, I did still admire his craftsmanship. On the other hand, I was able to get the jist of what he was trying to show in his political piece with an Obama-esk figure.
When I got back from the the gallery, I thought that it would help me out if I looked at anything about him or his work online. I came across his homepage and looked at his other work and really enjoyed his earlier pieces. They kind of speak to me more since they're color is a littler brighter and catches my eye more. However I'd be interested to see them in person, to see if the camera added this brightness... I still feel the kind of dingy-er colors he used in the pieces that are in the gallery now really say a lot and help the view really focus on the narrative of the piece. I just have a really bad "bright colors" bias... (I might as well just admit to it. It's the first step towards recovery, I geuss)
While also looking at his page, I found his statement that, I feel I connect to very well.
"Talent, skills and a knack for gimmickry are not enough. Constant practice and visual inquiry will in the end determine the worth of one's work."
I completly agree with his statement and can deffinatly see it in his work. Since I'm some-what addicted to perfecting and trying new techniques, his quote is rather inspiring to me.
I am also amazed with how well Morrill was able to continue his visual theme into sculture. His type of soft angles are beautifully represented. I'M JEALOUS OF HIS ABILITY FOOOOOO SHOOOOOOOOOO.

The ending (sound effect wise) doesn't really fit. But I think the hard work this person put into do this makes up for it and then some!

The Trickster Project
So I'm finally getting around to making my comment(s) about Duane McDiarmid and his exhibition! YAY! Although his presentation ran a little long, I thought that he brought up a lot of incitful and interesting ideas. Particularly, in his early work, with the use/playing with light and the images cast from the effect itself.
But most importantly is his idea involving the enviroment.
"The enviroment is our I.V. drip... You can squeeze the bag, but eventually the bag still runs out." Was the main idea behing McDiarmid's performance in dumping used motor oil all over him in a wet land area. In turn he presented the rags he used to clean himself off with (and the homemade pampers he stood on to absorb the access oil) as the "artifacts". Only the people there and "the wild life saw the art" as it happened.
I really loved this idea of presenting something to the wild life. It almost seemed like a sacrifice or paying proper omage to nature.
Overall, I was really inspired by the work McDiarmid presented. His work embodied a great intelligent idea. And I really enjoyed being there for it!

Oh Germans.
We watched this at the beginning of my German class. I missed the professor's introduction to this video, so I was so confused.

Ripped this image from worth1000.com
Entries had to incorporate a modern touch to old technology. This is the best one I've seen, but they're all pretty awesome.

Alesander Rodchenko
This is another artist I used as an influence for a project I did in high school. You might have seen a piece that was inspired by his work on the album art of Franz Ferdinand CD.
His work inspires a lot of interest in me since most art and any freedom of speech and expression was always controlled in Russia during the time Rodchenko was creating his work. His ideas were nothing less of interesting. However, many people now may not exactly realize how groundbreaking his ideas were.
I believe he helped the evolution of design and brought a new creative nature to the table.

Fiona Hooley
Here's another one of my favorite artists EVER! Fiona Hooley works in vectors and uses her own photography for manipulation. Lately its been her photography has been her main focus, but her vector work still astounds me. "No Girl So Sweet" is another work that has helped me realize that something simple as line and varying the thickness and placement in relation to other lines can achieve so much beauty and complexity to piece.
Here's the piece I'm talking about:

June Kim
One of my favorite artists EVER. You might have seen her work on the Jet "Get Born" album (if not, google it, its worth the minute!). Since finding her work, I have been rather obsessed with the, seemingly simple, use of line and space to create something absolutely stunning and complex.
Or you can go here! Her website has a great selection of her work, including her work from the Jet album.
